Police have arrested nine men who were allegedly soliciting street prostitutes in the inner Perth suburb of Highgate. The area has a long history of street prostitution and brothels, however due to high property prices and the growing Beaufort Street cafe strip, it is now seen as funky inner-city living, according to residents and property agents. After numerous complaints to the Town of Vincent that street walkers were again cropping up around Smith Street, Perth city detectives conducted a two-day operation targeting people who sought the company of street prostitutes.
The operation which took place on Wednesday and Thursday this week resulted in nine people being charged with seeking a prostitute in a public place and being given move on notices. The state government plans to give police extra powers to shut down illegal brothels and ban prostitution from residential areas under new laws before Parliament.
There will also be longer jail terms for brothel owners employing children - and larger fines if children are found there. Under the proposals, brothels could be allowed within metres of residential areas or metres of protected areas, such as churches or schools.
There were estimated to be about prostitutes working in WA, and 38 known brothels statewide, with 30 in Perth. Men 'solicit sex' from Highgate hookers: Police. Please try again later.
